Our History and the Alberta Football League

League Championship Format

In 1999 the AFL started a National Championship game which would see the winner of the Alberta Conference play the winner of the Eastern Conference.

Since then that game has changed to playing against the Northern Football Conference with teams in Ontario and Quebec. Since then only three Alberta organizations have won the National Championship title with the Calgary Wolfpack, the Lloydminster Vandals and the Ft. McMurray Monarchs.

In 2018 the Fort McMurray Monarchs won the National Championship VS GTA by a single point, making this seasons road-to the finals, go through the most northern city in the league.

The Brand New State-Of-The-Art Stadium at The Energy Centre

The Cold Lake Fighter Jets will play all home games at the recently built Thomas Varughese Field behind the Energy Centre in Cold Lake, Alberta.

The stadium has seating for over 1,000 guests, with bleacher seats or grass seating. The beautifully landscaped, open bowl style set-up, welcomes  fans to enjoy football, soccer, lacrosse or any other event held by the city. Including concerts and movie nights on the outdoor, inflatable video screen. The Alberta Football League (AFL) is a non-for-profit organization dedicated to providing a venue for football athletes to continue to play after they have finished their career in high school, junior, university or even after their time spent in the CFL.

The AFL was first started in 1984 with the Calgary Crude and the Calgary Cowboys. It has grown over the years from as many as 10 teams spanning as far north as Ft. McMurray to Calgary. With franchises started in Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Edmonton, Airdrie, Okotoks, Lloydminster and Wainwright.

The AFL has recognized talent from many different Universities all over Canada as well as top notch players who dressed for different organizations within the CFL.

Cold Lake Fighter Jets Join AFL

The introduction of the Fighter Jets to the city of Cold Lake and AFL was made in March of 2019, bringing senior men’s football to the city for the first time ever.

Practices and recruiting efforts began in early spring with various community and area businesses and groups, joining the team in support of the first season.

The team played game #1 on May 25th in what would be an eventual 27-6 win over the Airdrie Irish.

Joining the team captains were Chief Warrant Officer’s from  4 Wing Cold Lake, and City Councillor Jurgen Grau.

Since the Fighter Jets conception we have developed and grown as an organization, creating an atmosphere at our games making it a fun activity for the whole family.

In 2022 we took the league by storm, posting an impressive 9-0 record on the season and bringing home the teams first AFL Provincial Championship as well as defeating the GTA Allstars and becoming the CMFL National Champions. Currently UNDEFEATED on our home turf at 15-0!

Thanks everyone who has helped build the organization into a team the community can call their own!
